Alberto Pera - Gianni, Origoni, Grippo & Partners LLP


Alberto Pera is senior partner of the Antitrust Department at Gianni, Origoni, Grippo & Partners, where he has been involved, from 2000 onwards, in the most important merger and restrictive agreements proceedings concerning Italian enterprises, both in Italy and at the Commission level. From 1990 to July 2000 he has been Secretary General of the Italian Competition Authority. He led all the Authority’s offices and managed its main business functions. He represented the Authority before domestic and international institutions, especially in the Antitrust Director Generals’ meetings of the EU Member States and has been involved in drafting Community and national competition policies and regulations.

A former officer of the International Monetary Found, from 1987 to 1990 he was a consultant to various Ministers of Industry on competition and regulatory issues. As a representative of the Italian Government, he participated in the drafting of the EC Merger Regulation.

Alberto Pera is a lawyer and holds also a degree in Economics, as well as a Master in Economics awarded by the London School of Economics. He has taught economics and competition and regulation law in a number of Italian universities. He has authored three books and published a great number of articles on issues relating to competition law and policy, privatisation and regulation. On these topics he is a consultant to ASSONIME (Italian Association of Private Corporations) and a former consultant to the World Bank and the OECD. In 2005, he has counselled the European Commission and the Chinese Ministry of Economy in their joint programme aimed at the drafting of the (brand new) Chinese Competition Act. He is a Non Government Advisor in the International Competition Network, and participates in the ICN workshop on unilateral practices. He has also been appointed on various governmental panels concerning competition policy and regulation.

He is listed in the International Who’s Who of Competition Lawyers and Economists and is highly recommended as a competition expert by all major surveys of the legal profession.

He is a frequent speaker in competition conferences, and a member of the editorial board of the European Competition Journal.
